I learned to love fragrance before I could read the labels.

Fragrance came into our family through my aunt Jackie, a perfumer in New York City who taught my father, Malcolm, the industry. They each went on to build fragrance companies of their own. My father had a lab lined with shelves of amber bottles, and I grew up watching him work there, testing, adjusting, and coaxing each formula until it was exactly right. In our family, scent was never just something you wore. It was how you were known, and how you were remembered.

Before he passed, my father made one final fragrance, and he made it for me. I still keep that bottle close.

What he gave me was more than a perfume. It was proof that someone had paid close attention to my memories, my moods, and the person I was becoming.
